Dots for Android

Already a hit for iOS, Dots came to Android and Kindle Fire this week. Since its launch on iOS in May, the app has been downloaded more than 5 million times, and played more than 1 billion.

Yahoo Weather for Android

Yahoo’s beautiful weather app for iOS finally made its way to Android this week. The app incorporates images from Flickr into its weather forecast, showing you what a “cloudy day in New York” actually looks like. The app also includes 10-day and 24-hour temperature forecasts, interactive radar, satellite, heat and wind maps and animated sunrise and sunset times.

Gigwalk for Android

Gigwalk brought its mobile job service to Android this week. The app lets users pick up small jobs around their city that can often be completed on the phone itself. For instance, someone might be paid $5 to photograph a local business for a mapping company, or $10 to check the display of a particular product at their local grocery store.

Disney Infinity: Action!

Disney Infinity: Action! lets you create video clips starring your favorite characters from Disney’s upcoming Infinity console experience. The app uses augmented reality to bring the characters into your environment. Users get instant access to a clip in which Mr. Incredible appears to burst through the wall, and additional scenes — for a total of 30 — can be purchased within the app using coins earned from interacting with characters in the game portion of the app.

Nextdoor

 

 

Nextdoor, the social network designed specifically for neighborhoods, rolled out its Android app on Wednesday. The app connects neighbors, so they can easily discover what’s happening in town; that way, they can participate in activities such as organizing a neighborhood crime watch, helping find a lost pet or getting a suggestion for a repairman.

PayPal

PayPal updated its mobile app this week, allowing users to find nearby stores and restaurants that accept PayPal, as well as the ability to order ahead from restaurants. Around 1,000 restaurants will offer the service, with more expected to participate in the future.

GoPro

 

GoPro updated its app for iOS and Android this week. The new version of the app adds the ability to view photos and play back videos, as well as copy photos and videos to a GoPro album on your device.
The app already provides full control over all of your GoPro camera’s functions, as well as a live preview of your video, so you can frame it appropriately.

Zagat

 Zagat‘s app got a facelift this week, and now sports a brand new look.

The app's latest version also ditches the need for a Google+ sign-in, and adds restaurant menus, new articles and videos, as well as lists to help you plan an adventure.

Google Earth for Android app now lets you rediscover all of your geotagged Google+ photos

If you’re the type of person who travels a lot and captures all of your photos with a smartphone, tablet, or other device with geotagging capabilities, the latest update to the Google Earth for Android app should pique your curiosity.

 
In short, it’s now possible to view geocoded Google+ photos directly within the app. Sign in with your existing Google account and tap the Earth logo in the top left-hand corner to bring up the sidebar. At the bottom, under ‘More Maps’, a new selection should appear for Google+ photos.
Small thumbnail previews will now appear on top of Google Earth’s existing satellite imagery. Tap on them once and the app will launch a full-screen slideshow detailing everything saved in that Google+ photo album or location. It’s a whimsical experience and a lovely way to peruse old travel photos.

Android 4.4 KitKat Features
 Google hasn't revealed any features yet of the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat but instead, the company said: "our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."

With this statement from Google, it is expected that KitKat will become accessible to Android-running devices with lower RAM such as 512MB and older Android version such as 2.3 Gingerbread. This optimisation has been rumoured to be included in Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
Here are some hints on what Google would feature in Android 4.4 based on the KitKat chocolate:

A Refined Note

   With the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung upgrades its stylus-packing big-screen phone with a 5.7-inch full HD      screen and some new tricks for power users. It ships Sept. 25 worldwide.

Compared with Previous Notes and Galaxy Mega

 The Note 3 is the only model that is full HD (1,920 x 1,080).

S Pen

The S Pen returns in the Note 3, with new features.

Pen Window is even better than Air Command.Just by drawing a window on the screen, you can create a new application window for, say, browsing or calling up the calculator. When you're done, closing the window simply takes a tap with the stylus, and it doesn't interrupt the apps already running on-screen.

Air Command

One of the new features is Air Command, which calls up an S Pen-specific menu if you press the stylus button while hovering over the display.

 If you hover the stylus over the screen and then press the button, the semi-circle menu appears with options. Each one is illuminated as you hover, and tapping will activate the command. Action Memo, which lets you use the stylus to perform actions such as making a call, and S Finder, which can search the phone for handwritten content, strike me as the most useful.

Flipboard Interaction

 The special Flipboard app for Samsung's Note devices, which interacts with Air View hovering of the stylus, works well with the Note 3.

Window Case

The Note 3's window case could be better -- it has trouble staying closed -- but it has a nice leather-like feel.

Capacitive Buttons

Like other Samsung phones, the capacitive "hard" buttons on the bottom light up only when you press or hover over them.

Galaxy Gear Apps

The apps that you can use with the Galaxy Gear are in a separate folder.

While the Galaxy Note 3 can perform some interesting new tricks, the thing that will matter to all users is the beautiful, full HD screen. Even if you never slip the stylus out of its slot, you'll appreciate the sharper display. For power users, features like Air Command could save a few valuable seconds while performing key tasks, and Multi Vision is an eyebrow-raising — if gimmicky — feature.

We’ve reported on countless rumors surrounding the next Nexus device from Google, and many believe it will be another LG device similar to the LG G2 announced last month. A few rumors suggested the LG G2 will be the base for the Nexus 5, just like the 4, but the design will closely resemble the new ASUS-made Nexus 7. Complete with a matte back and a similar design around the camera. 
You might see that the phone is much larger than the Nexus 4 .
The nexus Is written in other direction than the nexus 4.


If previous reports and the LG G2 base for a design is correct, here’s what to expect. 
A 5.2-inch 1080p HD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core at 2.3 GHz and 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera and a massive 3,000 mAh battery for all day usage.
We’re not going to speculate too much here, but we’ve heard the new Nexus will be quite powerful and match the Nexus 4 on pricing. Well, before the price cuts last week. Get excited folks, and hopefully it supports 4G LTE on all major US carriers, including Verizon.

Google's Next Android version 4.4 to be named KitKat

 

 Google is calling the next version of its mobile operating system Android KitKat.

The news comes as a surprise as the firm had previously indicated version 4.4 of the OS would be Key Lime Pie.
The decision to brand the software with the name of Nestle's chocolate bar is likely to be seen as a marketing coup for the Swiss food and beverage maker.
Within 24 hours an agreement was made, though it's apparently "not a money-changing-hands kind of deal," according to report.

Since 2009, Google and its partners in the Open Handset Alliance have codenamed each Android release after a type of treat, with major updates progressing a letter along the alphabet.
Previous versions have been called Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo (short for frozen yoghurt), Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

Google says that "it's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody." That's certainly a bit vague, but the statement does line up with earlier rumors that suggested Google plans to use its next Android release in smartwatches, gaming consoles, low-cost smartphones, and even laptops.

1. Trace to type

One of Android 4.2's most significant new features is its trace-to-type keyboard. If you've used Swype in the past you'll know what to expect. Instead of tapping on each key to write something, you merely draw a line over the letters in sequence and lift your finger from the screen to add a space and move onto the next word. To enable it, go to Settings > Language and Input, and select the Android Keyboard option. Make sure 'Enable Gesture Typing' is ticked, and you're away. 

2. Share things instantly with Android Beam

 
Thanks to the inclusion of a NFC chip inside the Nexus 4, you can share data simply by holding your phone next to a compatible device. If you know someone else with a NFC-packing handset -- such as the Nexus S or the Galaxy Nexus -- you can use this feature to display things directly on their screen. If you're viewing a Web page, for example, or a Google Play listing, you can show your friend by beaming the same page to their device, instantly.  

3.Take a 360-degree images with Photo Sphere

Panoramic photos are so last year, man. The Nexus 4 can take 360-degree shots, thanks to its unique Photo Sphere option. It takes a while to compose the image as you have to take multiple shots, but the end result is unique to say the least. 

4.Lock screen widgets

 

Yet another new feature for Android 4.2 is lock screen widgets. From your lock screen you can take photos, browse your emails and check calendar appointments -- all without having to unlock your Nexus 4. This is especially handy if you use a gesture or passcode to secure you phone, as it saves you from having to input it every time you receive an email.  

5.Secure your phone with Face Unlock

 
One of Android's unique functions, Face Unlock allows you to access your device using nothing but your face. To enable it, go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock and select 'Face Unlock'

6.Charge your Nexus 4 without wires
 
Although it's not available yet, the Nexus 4 has its own wireless charging station, which tops up the phone's battery using induction charging technology. Thankfully, there are alternatives if you're fed up of waiting for Google and LG to get their collective acts together, such as the Philips Qi Charging Pad. 

7.Make your screen smarter
 
Screebl is one of the first applications I download whenever I move to a new Android device. It uses your accelerometer to tell when you're holding the phone and looking at the screen, and disables the timeout. This means you don't have to keep prodding the display to prevent it from sleeping if you're reading a web page or other content. When you rest the phone down on a flat surface, Screebl quickly puts the display to bed. Genius. 

8.Automatically back up all of your treasured photos

Google+ may not have taken the social networking world by a storm, but the Android application has one fantastic use -- it boasts an option, which allows you to automatically upload photos you've taken on your Nexus 4 to your Google+ account in the cloud. Even if you lose your device, you won't lose all those valuable memories.

9.Silence your phone fast
For those moments when holding down the volume button just isn't a quick enough way of shutting up your phone, you can hold down the Nexus 4's power button briefly to bring up a separate menu. From here you can put your phone into silent or vibrate mode with a single tap, saving your blushes during important meetings.  

10.Access your music from the cloud

Google Music is now available in the UK, and the Nexus 4 is the first phone to benefit from this expansion. You can upload your songs using your PC and then access them from the pre-installed Google Music application on your new Nexus phone. If your music doesn't show, check the app settings to ensure that it's been synced with your relevant Google account. 

11.Put your Nexus 4 into a Daydream

Daydream is another new facet of Android 4.2. It allows you to display content on your Nexus 4's screen either when it's docked or simply charging at the mains. You can have it show a clock, fancy colours, content pulled from your Google Currents account or even a selection of photos.

12.Power control

 
It's one of Android's most useful widgets and should be on every self-respecting owner's homescreen -- the Power Control widget allows you to toggle features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, auto-sync and screen brightness, all with a single tap.  

13.View your Google Play library from your homescreen

Introduced with the launch of the Nexus 7 tablet earlier this year, the Google Play library widget gives a snapshot of the most recent movies, music and books you've either purchased or accessed recently. As well as looking rather fetching, it allows you to quickly jump back into content you've enjoyed over the past few days. You can place the widget on any of your five homescreens by selecting it from the Application Drawer. 

Set applications to auto update
When you've got a shed-load of applications on your Nexus 4, manually installing updates can be a pain. Thankfully, there’s a way of automatically downloading and installing updates without having to lift a finger. Go to the Google Play market and select an app, then check the box which says 'Allow automatic updating'.  

13.Tidy up your homescreens

Even with five different homescreens, things can become crowded on your Nexus 4 if you're download-happy. A way of getting around this is to group apps into folders. All you have to do is press and hold down on an app, and then drag and float it over another app -- this will create the folder. Tapping a folder expands it and displays the contents within, and tapping the name of the folder will allow you to give it a more suitable moniker.
